FAQ

  • What happened to your old programs? I was waiting to enroll in Primary, Lower El, or Constellation.

We still offer all of the beautiful programs and resources that Child of the Redwoods is known for. In August of 2024, based on lots of feedback from our members, we decided that the best option moving forward was to combine the three programs into a single membership.

This decision coincided with big innovation! We completely retooled our courses + the lessons, and we created these amazing new Montessori planning cards you’re gonna love!

Take a look at our new membership options because you get a lot more for your money, and we are super proud of it.

  • Budget-focused family here, and Montessori materials are pricey! Do I need to own them for this to work for me?

No way! We aim for zero to low cost activities you can do with what you own and provide printable resources for you to use. The supply list s mostly contain items you already have around your home, including basic art materials like crayons, scissors, construction paper, paint, yarn, cardboard, popsicle sticks, and other kid-friendly hobby store stuff.

We keep it simple, but we do like to get crafty with our kids, and we can ensure a quality education no matter what you spend.

  • I signed up for a free trial. Now what?

First off, have fun! Our free trial gives you 7-days to enjoy our Theme of the Month program. During that time, you can download the current theme plus other materials, participate in the community, and join in any live events.

At the end of the 7 day trial, your account will renew at the enrolled rate. You can cancel at any time. If you don't want to renew, you must cancel your account before the next payment date. Manage your account, including upgrading and cancelling it, in the Account section of the membership site.

  • Why teach with themes? Is this adding extra lessons?

By creating theme packs for you with curated, scripted collections of Montessori lessons, we help you take an interdisciplinary approach to teaching your child. Interdisciplinary learning means no lesson is solely focused on one subject. Lessons link together, building one on another in limitless ways.

It’s a child-centered and highly engaging method that works for children with a range of personalities and ability levels.

While children’s interests and motivation can be highly unpredictable, good pedagogy (the science of teaching) is not. By publishing a new theme pack every month, we are able to help you make these connections across the curriculum. The themes help you cover the foundational lessons.

  • What if my child doesn’t want to do the theme of the month?

That’s totally fine! You can mix and match the lessons. In our Complete Curriculum and Unlimited plans, you can pick and choose from thousands of lessons, including all of the lessons in our theme packs, which can be selected individually based on your child’s interests.

Say your child really likes to paint, was fascinated with the squirrel at the park, and also a new sibling will be born soon. You can choose a color mixing experiment from the Pigment theme, play a squirrel nut-collecting math game from the Oak theme, and set up the baby doll washing activity from the Babies theme.

    Easy and fun!

  • Are the coaching sessions recorded?

YES! A million times yes. Our members live in many different time zones; many have really busy schedules.

Don’t worry about missing the coaching. We will always make it easy for you to watch the recordings.

  • How do I teach my child to read, write, and do math?

Kudos for asking, you go-getter homeschooler! The lessons, activities, and printables in our curriculum will support your child learning how to read + write and lend themselves to exploring the properties of numbers.

For example, in our Constellation theme packs, we often include grammar lessons, journal prompts, word problems, and measuring activities. Our Foundational Step-by-Step lessons provide sequenced curriculum for these academics.

If you are looking to provide the full Montessori method every subject, wWe suggest you join the Complete Curriculum or Unlimited plan levels, which combine Constellation and our Homeschool of the Redwoods: Primary and Lower Elementary programs.

  • Is the curriculum religious or secular?

Our curriculum is secular. We believe that all children deserve a high quality education, and we respect and value different religious beliefs and faith traditions.

  • Your program sounds amazing, but I’m not sure which plan to enroll in! How do I choose?

The right plan for most homeschoolers will be our Complete Curriculum plan, the middle tier.

If you’re looking to take the group coaching that goes with the Primary and/or Lower Elementary courses, you’ll want to go up one level to the Unlimited plan.

If you’re still uncertain, contact us to tell us about your child and we will help you make the decision that’s right for your family.

  • What is Whack-a-Mole and what does it have to do with homeschooling?

Remember that arcade game where a mole pops up out of the machine at random and you try to hit as many as you can before your time is up? Do not try to homeschool your kids like this.

If you are homeschooling without a clear plan and a smooth family rhythm, teaching the subject areas at random (or ignoring them altogether), you are playing Whack-a-Mole, my friend!

The Child of the Redwoods homeschooling system will get you out of the arcade and back into the real world. You’ll have clear directions for everything from what to teach to how to teach it!

We help you with planning. We give you the professional development training you deserve and a clearly sequenced, playful and engaging curriculum your whole family will enjoy.

  • Do you mail me anything?

No, we do not mail physical materials. Instead, we provide access to a wide array digital resources, including PDF-based documents, videos, and online coaching. In our theme packs, we include as many printable materials as possible for the lessons. Our goal is to keep cost low and make access easy.
